The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs football program began play in 1901, and has competed in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) since 1984.
The Bulldogs' most successful era came under head coach Joe Aillet, who led the team from 1969 to 1980. During his 12-year tenure, Aillet led the Bulldogs to a 102-29-2 record, including eight conference championships. He also led the Bulldogs to their first-ever bowl victory in the 1972 Independence Bowl.
Other notable Louisiana Tech football coaches include Sonny Dykes (who led the Bulldogs to four Conference USA championships from 2011 to 2014) and Skip Holtz (who led the Bulldogs to a Conference USA championship in 2021).
The Bulldogs have had several notable players over the years, including:
- Terry Bradshaw (four-time Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers)
- Willie Roaf (two-time Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots)
- Kenneth Dixon (undrafted free agent signee of the Baltimore Ravens who rushed for over 1,000 yards in his rookie season)
- Justin Ellis (defensive tackle with the Baltimore Ravens)
